Fallen oak trees, immersed deep in cold water for long periods of time without oxygen or light, slowly acquire a uniqueness of colour and strength from being submerged in alluvial sediments.

The combination of water and minerals, time and biophysical conditions create a wood that has had its basic natural structure changed, having had the natural resin replaced with natural minerals. This process is comparable to the geological formation of diamonds from coal, and makes for one of the rarest, hardest and most valuable woods in the world.

Our River (Bog) Oak is found by individual divers diving the various rivers throughout Central Europe. This painstaking process can last days, weeks or even months, before a log or suitable trunk is found. It is then excavated and transported to the workshop where it is left to dry naturally for many months. During this period, samples are taken and sent to the Krakow Laboratory of Absolute Dating where each piece is carbon dated to within 50 years.

  • Presented in a gift box
  • Copy of carbon dated laboratory report included
  • Information card included, providing an historical overview of what was happening in the world around that time
